Hong Kong looks into using Worldcoin to gather biometric information

The worries around the Worldcoin biometric data collecting have already passed in a number of nations.

Following the earlier issuance of the court orders, the world’s foremost privacy watchdog, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data in Hong Kong, raided the local offices of Worldcoin. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner expressed special worry about Worldcoin’s biometric data collecting and iris scanning procedures.

“The project may have breached relevant regulations in collecting and handling sensitive personal data,” the Office added in its acknowledgement. The citizens were urged by the Data Protection Office not to participate in this exercise. There will be more research done on the Worldcoin procedures in Hong Kong.

The CEO of OpenAi, Sam Altman, is leading the Worldcoin project, which is positioned as a worldwide financial network and identity.

Why is that relevant?

The Hong Kong privacy watchdog’s specific action is in line with the global backlash against the corporations’ use of user biometric collection. Concerns over the World Coin biometric data collecting have already been voiced by a number of nations.
