Crane Mishap at Thane Expressway Construction Site Claims 17 Dies, 3 Injured

A tragic incident occurred at the Samruddhi Expressway construction site, where a crane collapsed onto a group of workers, resulting in their immediate and unfortunate demise.

In Thane’s Shahapur, Maharashtra, a devastating accident occurred late last night, claiming the lives of seventeen workers who were tragically crushed to death after a crane collapsed on them at a construction site, according to the police.

During the construction of the Samruddhi Expressway, a crane accident resulted in the immediate death of a group of workers it fell upon. Additionally, three other workers sustained injuries and were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The workers were utilizing a girder launching machine, a specialized crane capable of moving substantial steel beams or girders utilized in the construction of highways, rail bridges, and serving as the base for large buildings.

As reported by the police, the incident occurred during the early hours of Tuesday close to Sarlambe village in Shahpur. The workers were involved in the construction of the third phase of Samruddhi Expressway when the accident happened. At present, rescue operations are underway, with police, fire brigade personnel, and other emergency services actively involved in the response efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sympathies and declared a financial assistance of ₹ 2 lakh for the families of the deceased as a token of condolence.

“Pained by the tragic mishap in Shahapur, Maharashtra. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are injured. NDRF and local administration are working at the site of the mishap and all possible measures are being taken to ensure proper assistance to those affected,” tweeted by the Prime Minister’s office.

Each next of kin of the deceased will receive an ex-gratia amount of ₹ 2 lakh from PMNRF, while ₹ 50,000 will be provided to each injured individual, according to the statement.

The Samruddhi Mahamarg, spanning 701 kilometers and commonly referred to as the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, serves as a significant thoroughfare linking the two cities.

The construction of the expressway is being undertaken by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The inaugural phase of the expressway, which connects Nagpur to Shirdi, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December of the preceding year.
